Powerful Gales Cause Tens of Thousands In the Dark in New Zealand

Storm damage in New Zealand
Residents encouraged to avoid going out as severe gales batter the country.

Severe gusts hitting speeds of approximately 155km/h (96mph) have caused nearly 90,000 homes lacking electricity and compelled agencies to cancel in excess of 100 aircraft departures, according to domestic outlets.

These gusts are affecting the complete South Island and southern parts of the northern region, per the country's meteorological service.

The nation's agencies have issued rare red wind warnings - the highest alert level - in key areas encompassing Wellington and Canterbury.

People have been advised to remain inside, refrain from journeys, and make arrangements for further electricity and network failures.

Widespread Destruction and Emergency Measures

The electricity loss seems to be impacting homes mainly in the southern region, though agencies say that energy was being slowly brought back.

Local media have stated that in some places structures have suffered roof damage, whereas power lines and trees have been toppled by the gusts.

In Wellington, a person was killed after being impacted by a falling limb at a popular trail walking spot on earlier this week.

Also in the capital, a woman was pushed toward oncoming traffic on a street by a intensive burst, in a event that was filmed in a popular vehicle recording.

Air travel entering and leaving the urban area have been halted because of the weather, whereas various routes and public facilities are shut down.

Meanwhile local leaders have declared a crisis declaration, to support recovery activities.

Work Stoppages During Severe Conditions

These intense gusts on today coincide with tens of thousands of teachers, doctors and other public workers take part in what has been termed a "major walkout", requesting higher wages and enhanced employment terms.

Yet the severe conditions has compelled them to modify certain arrangements, with several external protests shifted to interior venues or abandoned.

Comparable winds are also sweeping Australia, causing a period of extreme heat to the country's outback.

Authorities have announced fire bans for concern about wildfires.
