The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.
The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
