Comeback Daniil Medvedev Wins Maiden Championship in Over Two Years

Nineteen of Medvedev's 21 championships have been won on hardcourt

A comeback Medvedev secured his initial championship for nearly 30 months with success over Corentin Moutet in the competition final.

Medvedev, a former top-ranked player, has had a torrid season, achieving just a single victory at the Grand Slams and experiencing a setback at the American major.

Medvedev's inconsistency on the ATP Tour - and issues with his serving in especial - resulted in him dropping out of the world's top 10 and finally separating with long-term trainer Gilles Cervara.

Now training with Johansson and his other coach, Medvedev has gradually advanced in the recent weeks - climaxing in a tightly fought competitive triumph over challenger Corentin Moutet.

This represents his maiden title since the Rome competition and maiden on a hardcourt since that period of the previous year.

The win also signifies Medvedev has secured 21 victories at twenty-one distinct tournaments.

"This marks the first occasion I'm at a tournament with my children at once, so to win a championship is particularly special," said world number 14 the champion.

"This victory is in tribute of my child my daughter, because the initial championship I won when my first daughter Alisa was born was for her."

Medvedev, the past champion, had failed in his last six title deciders, featuring in that event in the past months.

His counter-punching strategy and recurring emotional displays on court had caused observers to wonder if his capacity to compete at the highest level was concluded.

But the player has made changes in recent weeks, attempting to approach the net and perform aggressively, reinforced by an improved serve.

He recovered from a break down in the opening set against the difficult Frenchman, winning four of the final five games to gain the advantage.

The competitors swapped service breaks in the following set before the Frenchman, striving for his first professional championship, took control to create a final set.

Moutet rescued 4 early-game chances in a close deciding set before the champion won the break to 15 to secure the win.

Appropriately, he secured victory with a shot at the net, with the Frenchman unable to control a shot after two hours and 38 minutes.
